2This term (like ‘Sadducees’ as well) is difficult to render in a way that is relevant to modern readers and circumstances—for of course both types are all-too familiar thruout history: the Sadducees as the centralized, wealthy, powerful and therefore conservative religious leaders; the Pharisees as the ubiquitous, more liberal but nonetheless dogmatic, teaching clergy. I have finally settled on that dogmatism in religious instruction, as perhaps expressing the essence of the pharisaical in NT times.
